 Welcome to the South African Commission for UNESCO website

Established in 1945, UNESCO is a specialised agency of the United Nations and contributes to the building of peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information.

The South African National Commission for UNESCO (SANATCOM) is a governmental commission operating under the Department of Basic Education.

The South African Commission has four principal functions:

  • ScienceCreating knowledge and understanding through science equips us to find solutions to today’s acute economic, social and environmental challenges and to achieving sustainable development and greener societies.
  • CultureIn today’s interconnected world, culture's power to transform societies is clear. Its diverse manifestations – from our cherished historic monuments and museums to traditional practices and contemporary art forms – enrich our everyday lives in countless ways.
  • Social and Human SciencesIn today’s increasingly diverse societies, UNESCO continues to accomplish every day its fundamental humanist mission to support people in understanding each other and working together to build lasting peace.  
  • Communication and InformationKnowledge and information have significant impact on people’s lives. The sharing of knowledge and information, particularly through Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) has the power to transform economies and societies.
