School infrastructure comes under the spotlight at the National Council of Provinces
A huge budget has been put aside this year for the development of school infrastructure across the country. The development of school infrastructure took centre stage in parliament when the Minister of Basic Education, Mrs Angie Motshekga, tabled her budget vote in the National Council of Provinces. Basic Education Budget Vote Speech
The overall budget for 2013/14 for the Department of Basic Education is R17.592 billion. Last year it was R16.344 billion. This is an increase of R1.248 billion. This confirms government’s commitment to education. The budget allocation to Provincial Education Departments is R173.454 billion. It will reach R199.624 billion in 2015/16. Read more...

Deputy Minister conducts school visits in North West Province
Efforts are underway to address the concerns of parents in the Madikwe region of the North West Province in relation to the provision of quality education. This comes after Deputy Minister Enver Surty was in the region to conduct school visits and engage in educational fact finding with parents in the area. Deputy Minister Surty visited three schools in the area, just 40 kilometres outside of Rustenburg. Read more...

Minister Motshekga’s open letter to SADTU
On the 24th of April 2013, the teacher union SADTU, supported by COSATU, held protest marches in Cape Town and in Pretoria, to make demands on the Department of Basic Education and the government.
