DBE and Chinese Embassy partnership sees donation of smart boards and Mandarin textbooks, 04 March 2017

The Minister of Basic Education, Mrs AM Motshekga and Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in South Africa, Mr Tian Xuejun will on Monday 06 March 2017 donate Smart boards and Mandarin textbooks at Willowridge High School in Pretoria.

The donation is part of the co-operation agreement between South Africa and China to forge close mutual technical co-operation, teacher training and expertise exchanges in the field in critical fields such as Mathematics, Science and Technology. The agreement also commits parties to work together in introducing Chinese Language teaching in South Africa and as a result, the Department has since introduced Mandarin as an elective foreign language in South African school’s curriculum.

Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) is implementing the pilot project on Chinese language teaching in schools. The Tshwane South District and the Gauteng North District have been selected to participate in the pilot programme to teach Chinese as a second additional language in schools. The Chinese Culture and International Education Exchange Centre (CCIEEC) supports the GDE in implementing the pilot.
