The Department of Education has the responsibility to lead the transformation of the pre-tertiary education system in the 9 provinces, through ongoing research, monitoring of trends and operational systems, reporting, policy formulation, facilitating of inter-provincial consultations and learning, advocacy of best practice amongst provinces and the formulation of short- to long-range plans for education as a whole.
The Directorate: Economic Analysis co-ordinates the compilation of sector budget bids and supporting activities include:
● Monitoring and analysis of provincial budgets ● Assessment of education investment trends ● Improving costing and expenditure projection tools ● Maintaining and improving the budget and planning formats of provincial education departments as well as a comprehensive education finance database.
Requirements: As a minimum, the applicant should posses the following attributes: ● A Bachelor's degree in Economics with a minimum of 8 years' teaching experience ● Technical skills needed for the manipulation of databases ● Excellent communication, writing and computer skills, including the skill of putting across complex economic issues in layman's terms ● Report writing skills of particularly high level, adequate for the production of both technical documents aimed at planning specialists and general documents intended for senior management or public consumption.
In addition, the following will count strongly in favour of the applicant: Experience in budgeting and financial planning in a South African Government department.
Duties: The Deputy Director will contribute to the above activities and have special responsibility for: ● Producing the annual sector Priorities Paper outlining the investment priorities ● Annually producing Provincial Education Department's budget comparison report ● Analysing education investment trends in terms of equity, efficiency and policy compliance ● Conducting research and analysis of the impact of education funding policies.

The Department of Education is looking for an energetic and experienced educator, with extensive experience in the development of youth children's literacy.
Requirements: ● Expert knowledge and understanding of scientifically proven reading approaches and programmes for helping children become competent readers ● Ability to lead research in this area ● Knowledge of international practice and literature in this area ● Extensive experience as both a schoolteacher and a literacy specialist ● Experience in large-scale project management, proficiency in at least two official languages (one of these an indigenous South African language) and good communication skills will be strong recommendations ● Computer literacy in spreadsheets, word documents and e-mail would be an additional recommendation ● An appropriate 3-year degree and professional training as an educator ● At least 7 years experience in the field ● Will also be expected to travel extensively and must therefore have a valid driver's licence.

Interested persons must be in possession of an appropriate 3-year Bachelor's degree (or equivalent qualification) and appropriate training as a teacher for languages (literacy), supplemented by at least 8 years' relevant experience. Provable multilingual competencies (written and spoken) will be an added advantage. Applicants must have extensive knowledge of and insight into the techniques and processes of designing, controlling, implementing and evaluating large-scale assessments, basic methods of data analysis and provable competence in writing and reporting to different audiences. Knowledge of South African education policies, legislation and the curriculum in the school sector is important. Basic research and general communication skills, ability to use computers for research-related purposes and project management skills are essential requirements. A broad knowledge of the assessment policies within the South African National Curriculum Statement is also important. The ability to work effectively and with necessary sensitivity in a diverse team under extraordinary pressure will be advantageous.
