Psychosocial Support Services

Psychosocial Support

Psychosocial support (PSS) focuses on equipping schools with necessary skills to address the psychosocial and mental wellbeing needs of learners. This includes creating a supportive learning environment that safeguards the social, emotional, and mental wellbeing of teachers and learners.

The objectives of psychosocial support are to:

  • Promote teacher and learner wellbeing.
  • support learners' social and emotional learning,
  • assist in identifying learners who are at risk and offer assistance (through referral and by connecting them to social welfare and health departments and organizations),
  • lessen the possibility that mental health issues will worsen and lead to risky behaviors, and
  • enhance resistance.

To strengthen the implementation of PSS programme, the Department of Basic Education has placed Learner Support Agents (LSAs) to provide support to vulnerable learners and implement activities relating to care and support. This includes working with School Based Support Team to screen and identify vulnerable learners and develop a plan to support them.
