The Department of Basic Education to celebrate World School Milk Day in Leandra, Mpumalanga, 06 December 2016

The Department of Basic Education will tomorrow, Wednesday 07 December 2016 under the banner of the National School Nutrition Program (NSNP) commemorate World School Milk Day at Mpumelelo Primary School in Leandra, Mpumalanga.

Under the theme ‘’A Glass of Fresh Milk Daily Makes Healthy, Active and Smart Children’’ the Department in conjunction with Dewfresh and Milk SA will impart to learners and school communities the benefits of milk consumption including maintaining good health and a premium source of calcium. Milk is served to the over 9 Million Learners across the 21 000 Primary, Secondary and Special Schools who benefit from the NSNP as it is in keeping with the programme’s aims of helping learners improve their capacity to participate optimally in school.

The DBE has taken initiative to strengthen and support the improvement of Nutrition Education in schools with the aim of enhancing knowledge of good nutrition and healthy lifestyles among learners, educators, school administrators, parents, food handlers, school vendors and tuck-shop operators. It further seeks to mobilise school communities to adopt and sustain lifestyle choices that enhance health and well-being.
