The Department of Basic Education (DBE) will host a Findings Discussions Sessions on the Early Grade Reading Study that was conducted in North West since 2015. The discussion will take place at the DBE Conference Centre in Pretoria on from 16-17 August 2017.
The study is a collaboration between the DBE and the University of Witwatersrand and other researchers on the acquisition of reading in Setswana. This study is taking place in a total 230 schools in the Ngaka Modiri Molema and Dr Kenneth Kaunda district in North West. The research was limited to Quintile 1 – 3 schools with Setswana as the language of learning and teaching in the Foundation Phase.
Other partners involved with the study include Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie).UNICEF, ZENEX Foundation, Anglo American, the Department of Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation (DPME), and the North West PED.
In addition to the participants mentioned an International speaker from Kenya, Dr Benjamin Piper, Chief of Party, International Education, International Development Group, who has led significant work in reading in developing countries including the Kenya Primary Math and Reading Initiative (PRIMR) will be presenting.
