Minister Motshekga launches the News for Kids Project, 24 April 2017

The Minister of Basic Education Mrs Angie Motshekga will tomorrow Tuesday, 25 April 2017 launch the New Kids Project in partnership with the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA, the German Press Agency) at the Igugu Primary School in Dube, Soweto.

The German Press Agency and the Department of Basic Education have been working together on this project, informally, since mid-2016 and eight (8) editions have since been produced. So far a pilot group of only 20 schools in Gauteng have been taking part in the project, but it is hoped that the project will eventually be implemented at many more schools.

The project aims to ensure that it provides children with child-friendly newspapers to entice learners to read; improve reading and writing abilities of learners, awaken in learners a curiosity about the world around them and gradually teaching them the skill of critical reading.

Members of the Media are invited to the launch of the News for Kids Project as follows:

Date:              Tomorrow, Tuesday, 25 April 2017
Time:              11H00
Venue:           Igugu Primary School, Elias Motsoaledi Road, Dube, Soweto (next to Fred Clarc Primary)

Enquiries:     Elijah Mhlanga: 083 580 8275
