Minister Motshekga Sends Condolences to Families of North West Fire Tragedy, 24 August 2015

The Minister of Basic Education, Mrs Angie Motshekga notes with great sadness the incomprehensible tragedy that has befallen a school for deaf learners in the North West province.

The heart-breaking scenario played out in the early hours on Monday morning when a fire broke out in the girls’ hostel building of a North West school for the deaf in Leeuwdoringstad killing three teenage girls.

The fire broke out at around 01h00, and a further 53 learners were admitted for trauma and smoke inhalation at the Nic Bodenstein Hospital in Wolmaranstad.

The Minister sends her deepest condolences to the family of the deceased girls during this traumatic time, “I know words cannot console the family members at this point who have lost their precious loved ones in such a horrific way, but they must know that Government is doing everything in its power to get to the bottom of what caused the blaze and hopefully provide some solace to the parents of these girls who were just about to reach the peak of their youth,” said Motshekga.

Minister Motshekga has been given assurances from the Provincial Government team set up by the Premier’s office that a full forensic investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.

The Minister wishes the injured learners a speedy recovery.
