The Department of Basic Education will on Saturday 06 October 2018 host the finals of the 2018 National Spelling Bee Championships at the University of South Africa (UNISA) in Pretoria.
The finals will see Grade 4-6 learners compete for top honors and the crown of ‘Spelling Champion’ as the nation’s top young spellers take each other on in the high level competition. The competition is open to all schools in South Africa and encourages learners from all backgrounds to improve their levels in both literacy and numeracy
The Departments partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC), Spell It, UNISA, SABC Education, AVBOB foundation and Monash South Africa has helped to strengthen the overall quality of the competition and helped to extend the reach of the programme across the country.
In 2018, the Spelling bee competition will be honored by the Deputy Minister of Basic Education Mr Enver Surty who will deliver a keynote and hand over prizes to the winning school teams.
