Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga and Deputy Minister Reginah Mhaule will meet with delegates from the Danish Office of the Hempel Foundation, which has partnered with the Department to support and pilot innovative interventions to strengthen the quality of reading and numeracy in the early years of primary schooling.
The partnership aims to develop and pilot innovative interventions to strengthen quality of reading in Grades 1 – 3, and to increase especially retention and learning outcomes of vulnerable children in rural areas. The partnership will focus on areas and locations selected by UNICEF, based on the poorest, most rural and remote areas with indicators of significant gender disparity in education. Provinces that will benefit from the partnership include the North West, Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
The Minister and Deputy Minister will interact with the CEO of Hempel Foundation, the Danish Ambassador, the Danish Deputy Ambassador and UNICEF Representatives at a gala event in Menlyn, Pretoria on Thursday 6 June 2019 at 6pm.
