The month of May is observed as Africa Month, a time when the continent of Africa commemorates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 25 May 1963. The OAU, now known as the African Union (AU), was established to promote unity, solidarity and development across the continent. In celebration of this milestone Africa Day on 25 May and throughout the month of May, is commemorated annually.
Africa Month provides a platform to promote the African agenda, which includes advancing education, peace, prosperity and inclusive development. This month further aims to strengthen AU institutions and support the implementation of key continental policies and frameworks. Africa Month is also aimed at implementing and bringing to life the AU Agenda 2063 and the Charter for African Cultural Renaissance.
In South Africa, Africa Month 2025 is celebrated under the theme: “Building the Africa We Want through Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability”, in line with the G20 Presidency. The country is on the brink of exciting educational transformation as it heads the G20 Presidency in 2025. Under this prestigious role, the G20 Education Working Group (EdWG) is set to tackle three pivotal priorities: Quality Foundational Learning; Mutual Recognition of Qualifications; and Education Professional Development for a Changing World. These priorities underscore South Africa’s dedication to fostering an inclusive, equitable and future-ready education system.
The main element of the logo for South Africa’s G20 Presidency represents the King Protea, our national flower. It embodies resilience, cultural pride, hope and natural splendour. The King Protea’s ability to regenerate after fire, mirrors the country’s spirit of renewal and hope. Just like the people of South Africa, who have faced historical struggles and triumphs, the King Protea stands tall even in adversity. During Africa Month and beyond, South Africans are invited to become part of this transformative journey to engage in the Provincial Indabas, share insights and help shape the future of education in South Africa, and the entire African Continent.
