DG Mweli celebrates KwaZulu-Natal NSC results at the ICC in Durban

Basic Education Director-General, Mr Mathanzima Mweli, celebrated the announcement of the 2024 NSC examination results with KZN Education MEC, Mr Sipho Hlomuka and his team at the Durban ICC on 14 January 2025.

The KwaZulu-Natal Province obtained a pass rate of 89.5%, marking an increase of 3.2% from 2023. In addition, the Umkhanyakude Education District obtained third position in respect of education district performance with 92.8%. KwaZulu-Natal was once more the top performing province in terms of the percentage of candidates obtaining distinctions, with 10.8% distinction potential achieved. Caden Govender from Greenbury Secondary School was the top achiever in KZN. “The Class of 2024 is a remarkable cohort of individuals who have travelled a challenging path, facing unprecedented obstacles that tested their resilience,” said MEC Hlomuka.

“It is clear from the improvement in the overall pass rate that we are a system on the rise. Our District Directors deserve our praise and gratitude for the incredible work they have put into ensuring that our schools were supported to improve their academic performance. You have played and continue to play a critical role in driving excellence in your respective districts. I personally visited all 75 districts last year leading up to the NSC examinations to ensure that Last Push activities were in place as part of our Learner Support Programme. In addition, online provincial engagements took place with all provinces” DG Mweli said.

MEC Hlomuka, accompanied and supported by HoD Mr Nkosinathi Ngcobo and his team, have concluded insightful oversite visits to schools in the KwaDukuza, iLembe District. The iLembe District has 418 schools, including 119 high schools and 299 primary schools. The District Director and his team has worked closely with schools, SGBs and stakeholders to improve the district’s matric pass rate to 89% in 2024. The MEC started his visit at Groutville High School, where he congratulated the school on their performance in the 2024 NSC examination. This is one of the schools that has the highest enrolment rate in the district. The total number of enrolled learners is a staggering 2,752, whilst learners registered for Grade 12 is 504. In 2024, 394 learners were enrolled to write the NSC examination and 388 of the learners passed, which represents a 98.5% pass rate, an impressive 82% obtained a Bachelors' pass. The MEC also visited Dr BW Vilakazi Primary School and was pleased with the overall state of readiness for the 2025 academic year. He thanked the educators for promptly returning learners to classrooms to resume learning.
