The Department of Basic Education (DBE), in collaboration with the Zenex Foundation, conducted a materials development workshop from 18 to 24 November 2024, at the Emperors Palace Hotel and Convention Centre in Johannesburg, Gauteng.
The materials development workshop was for ensuring quality assured materials for the Mother Tongue-based Bilingual Education (MTbBE) roll-out of Grade 4 Mathematics, Natural Science and Technology learner workbooks in 2025 in all African Languages.
In attendance at the workshop were curriculum advisers, subject specialists from all provinces in South Africa and language specialists, who are terminologists from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC). The DBE has a partnership with the South African Center for Digital Language Resources (SADiLAR) from the South African North West University.
The Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) will verify and approve the terminology once the translation and versioning process have been completed. The DBE, assisted by the National Education and Collaboration Trust (NECT), ensured the success of the workshop.
