Research Repository

There is a plethora of sector-specific research commissioned and conducted within the DBE that has previously not been in the public domain. This repository serves as a mechanism to make this information available. It contains sector-specific research that has been commissioned and conducted within the DBE. There are 120 reports that have been categorised into 12 themes, dating from 1996 to 2019. The full title of the report, institution, year of publication, and abstract are provided. The pdf of the report can also be downloaded.

The repository will be updated annually.

THEMES

Access and enrolment in schools

Reports under this theme deal with issues of access to schooling, learner enrolments, school completion, performance award systems, improvements in learner performance, perceptions regarding quality of schooling in independent schools, trends in the relative under-performance of males in the schooling system, schooling outcomes, incidence of learner absenteeism, perceptions and experiences of primary school teachers in using information from ANA, retention and factors contributing to dropout.

Assessments

Reports falling under this theme focus on national and international assessments - NSC, ANA, TIMSS, SACMEQ and PIRLS, with specific attention on those that are systemic and diagnostic in design. A reflection of performance at various levels (district, school, learner, and item) is given; best practise in the design and development of assessments is investigated.
