The DBE, through its Human Resource Management (HRM) Directorate, hosted a Long Service Awards ceremony to recognise the unwavering commitment, loyalty, and professionalism of public servants who have dedicated decades to shaping South Africa’s education landscape. Held at the Pretoria National Zoo on 5 December 2025, the event celebrated employees who have served the Department for 10, 20, 30, and 40 years. Certificates were awarded as symbols of service that have stood the test of time and contributed to strengthening the country’s basic education system.
Deputy Minister Dr Reginah Mhaule, opened the ceremony by warmly welcoming dignitaries, senior managers, staff, and award recipients. She expressed deep appreciation for the long-standing contributions of employees whose dedication has helped stabilise and advance the Department and the broader education sector. Dr Mhaule noted that the ceremony was a moment of pride and appreciation, honouring individuals who have helped build a culture rooted in excellence and service. She reaffirmed the department’s commitment to the principles of Batho Pele, adding, “I am confident that we will continue to uphold the ethos of Batho Pele, putting people first. We are here to serve, to serve people, not to serve ourselves”.
Minister Siviwe Gwarube reflected on the core mission of the Department and the significance of recognising public servants who have dedicated many years to ensuring the delivery of education. She emphasised that the work of the DBE remains grounded in the lives of real children and communities, and that the commitment of long-serving employees directly shapes the country’s education outcomes. Minister Gwarube commended the resilience, innovation, and professionalism displayed by DBE staff across all levels of the organisation, urging them to keep the learner at the centre of every action and decision. She expressed gratitude to those who continue to serve with dedication: “Thank you for choosing the public service. Thank you for choosing our children. Thank you for choosing to stay, even when the winds of change have been difficult”.
The Department extends its heartfelt congratulations to all employees recognised during the Long Service Awards. Your hard work, loyalty, and passion for education remain essential to the progress of the basic education system. As the DBE celebrates these remarkable achievements, it also reaffirms its commitment to supporting the public servants whose contributions continue to shape the future of South Africa’s learners.
