The 2026 Autumn National School Sport Championships (NSSC) for Athletics successfully took place from 29 April to 2 May 2026 at Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria, bringing together talented young athletes from across the country for four days of competition, sportsmanship, and school sport excellence.
The Championships were hosted through a collaborative partnership between the Departments of Basic Education and Sport, Arts and Culture, and South African Schools Athletics, a programme under Athletics South Africa. The partnership reflects a continued commitment to strengthening school sport and creating opportunities for learner-athletes from diverse communities and backgrounds. It is also aimed at ensuring that learners from both primary and high schools have access to organised sport programmes throughout their schooling journey.
The Autumn NSSC for Athletics included participation of learners with Special Education Needs (LSEN) schools, reinforcing the importance of inclusivity and equal opportunity within school sport. The event also served as a platform for talent identification and athlete development, with many learners showcasing the potential to progress to higher levels of competition.
Throughout the Championships, the athletes demonstrated determination, discipline, resilience and talent. They competed in a variety of track and field events that included sprints, middle-distance races, relays, hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put, discus, and javelin.
The opening ceremony, held on 29 April 2026, featured a keynote address by the Deputy Minister of Basic Education, Dr Reginah Mhaule, who motivated and encouraged learners ahead of the competition. Addressing athletes, parents, teachers, and officials, she emphasised the importance of support systems, discipline, hard work, and sacrifice in shaping future sporting success. She also reminded learners that the platform was not only about winning medals, but about recognising possibilities, building confidence, and nurturing future champions who may one day represent South Africa on international stages.
Medal presentations were held daily during finals sessions, culminating in the official closing ceremony on 2 May 2026. Gauteng Province claimed the overall Championship title after delivering strong performances across both track and field events throughout the competition. The Western Cape and Free State Provinces claimed second and third positions in the final overall medal standing. The Championships once again highlighted the important role of school sports in promoting social cohesion, nation-building, youth development, and healthy lifestyles amongst South African learners.
