It is that time of the year when athletes from all walks of life will descend on Durban to battle the 99th edition of the Comrades Marathon. This year’s edition is an Up-Run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg, taking place on 14 June 2026, with a total of approximately 22,500 athletes from all over the world participating.
As in previous years, the Education Athletics team will once again be taking part. This year, the DBE is proud to announce the following participants: Mr Bongani Zondi: 16th Comrades Marathon (Green Number), Race No 22798 to track on Comrades App; Ms Seitheki Pue: 8th Comrades Marathon, Race No 32961 to track on Comrades App; Mr Edwin Shoko: 7th Comrades Marathon, Race No 10596 to track on Comrades App; and Ms Neo Thebe: 3rd Comrades Marathon, Race No 47131 to track on Comrades App.
The DBE congratulates the team on their past achievements and wishes them well ahead of this year’s Comrades Marathon under the slogan, “Ska Fela Moya”; no matter how tough the conditions will be, they will bring all the medals home. The athletes will be supported on the route by two members of the Club, Mr Lungile Spofana and Mr Karabo Tladi, providing the necessary support to the athletes that will be running in the form of supplements and any other support the athletes will require whilst running, along with transport back to Durban from Pietermaritzburg.
As a tribute to perseverance, the DBE’s Mr Theo Beukes, who is also a Comrades Marathon Green Number athlete having finished 10 Comrades over the years, will be participating in his 350th Park Run on 13 June 2026. Mr Beukes is a source of inspiration to colleagues and fellow athletes. Mr Beukes also continues to participate in Park Run events at amongst others, Onderstepoort, Ludwig Roses and the Botanical Gardens.
