The National Cross-Country Championship took place at Rob Ferreira High School, White River in Nelspruit this past weekend. The DBE’s contribution to the Championship with the Local Organising Committee (LOC) made a significant impact to the South African learners who participated in it. It was opened with inspiring words from Mr Sabata Kumalo, President of Schools Athletics South Africa. In his address, Mr Kumalo emphasized the importance of the event as the foundation of athletic development in the country. He described cross country as more than just a race; it is the beginning of many athletes’ journey toward national and international success.
Mr Kumalo highlighted that many of South Africa’s celebrated athletes first made their mark in cross country before transitioning to track and field events. He explained that endurance and stamina built through cross-country play a vital role in shaping well-rounded athletes capable of competing at the highest level. The event, therefore, is a critical stepping stone in athletics.
Some participants in this year’s Championship were selected for World Athletics Championship trials, a testament to the event’s role in identifying world-class talent. Schools serve as the breeding ground for potential stars, with Athletics South Africa taking on the responsibility of refining that raw potential. The inspiring story of Akane, an athlete who successfully transitioned from sports to entrepreneurship, proves that athletics can open doors both on and off the field.
Acknowledging the challenges faced, South African Schools Athletics expressed regret over the absence of athletes from KwaZulu-Natal due to unforeseen difficulties. The province is currently experiencing financial constraints. Nonetheless, Schools Athletics South Africa celebrated the strong turnout and enthusiastic participation from other provinces, particularly Mpumalanga, whose athletes injected energy and spirit into the competition. During the opening ceremony, Mr Bongani Zondi from the DBE’s Sport and Enrichment Directorate, extended heartfelt appreciation to the PEDs, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, together with their provinces, South African Schools Athletics, School Governing Body Associations, Teacher Unions, Principals and School Management Teams and parents for their unwavering support. He commended their efforts in helping young people recognize and harness their potential through sports.
