DBE congratulates Minister Motshekga for receiving the Knight of the French National Legion of Honour Award

Minister of Basic Education, Mrs Angie Motshekga received the prestigious Knight of the French National Legion of Honour or “La Légion d'honneur” from the Ambassador of the French Republic to South Africa, His Excellency, Mr David Martinon, at the French Embassy in Pretoria on 13 October 2023. The award is in recognition of Minister Motshekga’s commitment towards access to quality education, inclusive education, girls schooling, the challenge of youth employability and as a privilege partner for educational cooperation between South Africa and the French Republic.

During the event, Mr Martinon said, in honouring Minister Motshekga: “Your commitment and dedication also travelled across borders as you have taken it upon yourself to champion the partnership between France and South Africa, not only in your commitment to basic education in your own county, but also in promoting educational cooperation between our two nations. In 2019, a bilateral education agreement was signed between France and South Africa, setting the stage for unprecedented cooperation in the field of education. The core pillars of our education cooperation are aligned with the strategic objectives of both our countries and include governance in educational institutions, curriculum development, French language teaching, as well as nutrition education, combatting bullying, cyberbullying and Gender-Based Violence in schools. Minister Motshekga, your pivotal role in fostering educational cooperation between our two nations is remarkable. Your tireless efforts have strengthened the bonds of friendship between South Africa and France”.

Receiving the Award, Minister Motshekga responded that, “to be named a Knight of the National Order Legion of Honour is not just a personal accolade, but a testament to the unyielding spirit of our nation and the enduring bonds that tie South Africa and France together. As I stand before you today, deeply honoured, I am reminded of the words of our beloved former President, Nelson Mandela, when he accepted the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour in 1995. He said, This award is a great honour for me, and it is also a recognition of the struggle of the South African people for democracy and human rights. I accept it on behalf of all those who have fought and sacrificed for freedom in South Africa. I have always believed that basic education is the cornerstone of any society and the foundation upon which we build our future. To be acknowledged for my service in this realm feels like a validation of my efforts and countless educators, students, and parents who strive daily to uplift our society through knowledge and empowerment. As we gather here, let this occasion also be a testament to the enduring friendship between France and South Africa. Our shared histories, common goals, and mutual respect for democracy, education, and human rights continue to be the pillars of our partnership. In conclusion, while I'm profoundly grateful for this honour, I view it as a symbol – a symbol of the unyielding spirit of our nation, the transformative power of basic education, and the shared values that bind South Africa and France. Let us continue to work hand in hand, forging ahead towards a brighter, more enlightened future,” concluded the Minister.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) congratulates Minister Motshekga on her remarkable achievement that is indeed testimony to her dedication and commitment to the education sector, teachers, learners, parents, School Governing Bodies (SGBs), unions and all partners and stakeholders towards the provision of quality education.
