DG Mweli continues with monitoring and support programme of SAFE construction sites across provinces

Basic Education Director-General, Mr Mathanzima Mweli, continued with the monitoring and support programme of the Sanitation Appropriate for Education (SAFE) construction sites in schools across provinces.

Mr Mweli visited 40 sanitation projects in the Eastern Cape Province from 1214 February 2024, to ensure that deadlines are met and Implementing Agents complete projects timeously. This week’s focus has been on projects allocated to the NECT Implementing Agent.

The monitoring programme, which started on 12 February 2024, covered 7 schools in the Sarah Baartman District, on 13 February 2024, 23 schools in the Amathole West and Chris Hani West Districts were covered, and on the last day, 10 schools in Chris Hani East and West Districts were covered. This then meant that 40 schools which were targeted for this week were all covered.

The DG is accompanied by Senior Managers from National, Provincial and District level of both DBSA and the DBE who possess expertise of Education planning development and implementation; Finance and Accounting; Engineers; Quantity Surveyors; Architects and Project Managers.

The summary of the observations and findings is that many projects are experiencing water ingress. The team also identified projects that have reached practical completion since 2022, but have not been handed over to the schools to use them. A lot of omissions were identified, as well as poor workmanship which was rampant throughout many projects. All these findings will be presented to both the Implementing Agent NECT, contractors as well as consultants for remedial measures and attention.
