In a move to bridge the technology divide in South African classrooms, the Rural Education Directorate, in partnership with MiDesk Global, officially handed over 100 smart desks on Friday, 23 January 2026.
The handover, which was sponsored by MiWay Insurance and the DBE at Empumelelweni Primary School in Umlazi, highlighted Government’s commitment to an inclusive, future-ready education system through effective public-private partnerships.
The mobile desks, each equipped with a writing surface, school bag, and solar-powered reading light, are designed to enhance learning conditions and unlock learners’ potential. Speaking at the event, MiWay Insurance representatives described the desks as “vessels of ambition and potential,” whilst Rural Education Director, Dr Phumzile Langa, noted that they represent “keys to opportunity and hope for future leaders”.
To conclude the day, MiWay Insurance also gifted learners with 100 pairs of school shoes, leaving smiles on the faces of many grateful learners.
