The Department of Basic Education (DBE), through its Mathematics, Science and Technology (MST), Curriculum Innovation and E-Learning Directorate, supported the 2026 Eskom Expo for Young Scientists regional science fairs held across KwaZulu-Natal, providing learners with an opportunity to showcase their research, innovation and problem-solving abilities.
The KZN Central Region Regional Science Fair took place on 12 August 2026 at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Edgewood Campus in Pinetown, Durban. The DBE’s Deputy Director-General for Curriculum Policy, Support and Monitoring, Dr Barney Mthembu, engaged with learners, educators and visitors, emphasising the important role that young people can play in shaping South Africa’s future through science, technology and innovation.
Dr Mthembu encouraged learners to remain curious, pursue Mathematics, Science and Technology, and apply their knowledge to real-world challenges. During his visit, he viewed a range of projects showcasing scientific investigations, engineering solutions and innovative ideas developed by learners.
The Central Region fair also recognised learners for their achievements, with bronze and silver medals awarded across categories including Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Energy, Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, Plant Sciences and Social Sciences.
The Northern KZN Regional Science Fair followed on 14 August 2026 at John Douthwait Hall in Newcastle. The fair brought together young scientists who presented projects demonstrating their research, creativity and commitment to developing solutions to societal challenges. Representing the DBE, Mr Menzi Seribe, MST Conditional Grant official and International Relations Coordinator in the MST, Curriculum Innovation and E-Learning Directorate, delivered the opening address on behalf of the Department. He highlighted the strategic role of MST education in preparing future scientists, engineers, innovators and researchers, while reaffirming the DBE’s continued support for MST education through initiatives such as the MST Conditional Grant, Coding and Robotics, teacher development programmes, specialised Mathematics and Science schools, and strategic partnerships.
Learners at the Newcastle Regional Science Fair were recognised with bronze, silver and gold awards across a broad range of categories, including Agriculture, Animal Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Computing, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, Engineering, Energy, Physics, Plant Sciences, Social Sciences and Mathematics.
Established in 1980, the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists has provided school learners with a platform to conduct research, deepen their scientific knowledge and showcase innovative ideas. The 2026 KwaZulu-Natal Regional Science Fairs continued this legacy, creating opportunities for young scientists to share their work, develop their skills and demonstrate their potential to contribute to the country’s scientific and technological future.
