South Africa's investment in Mathematics, Science and Technology continues to produce global innovators

South Africa is continuing to see the impact of sustained investment in Mathematics, Science and Technology (MST) as two outstanding learner teams from Limpopo represent the country at the Robotics for Good Youth Challenge Grand Finale, taking place from 7–10 July 2026 in Geneva, Switzerland.

The teams, Robo-Kidz from Mashupye Tladi Primary School and Roborise from Bokamoso Secondary School, earned their place on the international stage after winning the junior and senior categories of the national competition. Their achievement reflects the growing success of the Department of Basic Education's investment in Coding and Robotics and the broader MST Strategy, which equips learners with the skills required to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital economy.

Through the MST Conditional Grant, approximately 90,000 learners in Limpopo benefit annually from coding camps, robotics competitions, science fairs, Olympiads, and other enrichment programmes that nurture innovation and excellence.

Mr Walter Kekana, Director for Mathematics, Science and Technology in the Limpopo Department of Education and Provincial Coding and Robotics Coordinator, said the learners' achievement demonstrates the value of sustained investment in STEM education: “These learners are living proof that investment in Mathematics, Science and Technology is transforming lives. Through Coding and Robotics, they are developing the confidence, creativity and problem-solving skills needed to become future innovators and leaders. Their success shows that with the right support and opportunities, South African learners can compete with the best in the world.”

Acting Director for Communications at the Department of Basic Education (DBE), Mr Terence Khala, said the achievement reflects the Department's commitment to building a future-ready education system: "These learners are showcasing the very best of South African education on the global stage. Their success demonstrates what is possible when sustained investment in STEM education is matched by dedicated educators and meaningful opportunities that empower young people to innovate and solve real-world challenges."

The DBE congratulates the learners, educators, parents, the Limpopo Department of Education, and all partners who have contributed to this remarkable achievement, which continues to demonstrate that South Africa's investment in Mathematics, Science and Technology is producing a generation of globally competitive young innovators.
