South Africa's recent success at both the African Spelling Bee Championships and the Inaugural World Spelling Bee Championships demonstrates that the nation's learners are increasingly recognised as world-class competitors.
The Minister of Basic Education, Ms Siviwe Gwarube, hosted a virtual welcoming ceremony with Team South Africa and their parents: “What an extraordinary achievement! Your fourth-place finish at the Inaugural World Spelling Bee Championships held in Shanghai, China from 14 to 19 July 2026, has made every South African proud. You demonstrated exceptional ability, determination and composure”. The Minister congratulated the six learners, their families, educators and partners for flying the South African flag with distinction, demonstrating the exceptional talent that exists within the country's basic education system. Two learners finished in the world's top ten, and all six learners progressed beyond the competition's artificial intelligence-enabled preliminary assessment, one of South Africa's strongest performances on the international academic stage.
“South African learners are capable of competing with and outperforming the best in the world when provided with the right opportunities, dedicated educators and strong foundational skills,” she said, commending the parents for the sacrifices they have made to support their children. She added that achievement reflects the growing impact of sustained investments in literacy, reading and foundational learning, whilst reinforcing the Department's commitment to raising standards of academic excellence across the country.
The DBE’s Deputy Director-General for Delivery and Support, Ms Simoné Geyer, said that the Department will continue working with its partners to strengthen and expand the National Spelling Bee Programme across all nine provinces, ensuring that more learners have access to opportunities that promote reading, literacy and academic excellence to build on this success as the country continues to grow and excel on the global stage. “This is an opportunity for our learners to overcome the challenges experienced with reading with understanding and for meaning”, she added.
Two parents, Mr Cobus van Wyngaard and Ms Anisha Singh, representing the parents, acknowledged the role that community and partnerships play in deepening literacy and the success of the Spelling Bee Championships: “Great achievements are never achieved alone; working together has afforded our learners with an opportunity to ascend the international stage owing to personal sacrifices, the courage to dream boldly, and the honour to watch your children stand shoulder to shoulder with some of the world’s best”.
