Minister Motshekga honours Dr Soyisile Nuku, former Eastern Cape HoD

The memorial service for the late Dr Abraham Soyisile Nuku, former Eastern Cape Head of Education Department (HoD) took place at the Christian Centre at Abbotsford in East London on 30 January 2024. Dr Nuku passed on 24 January at the age of 64 following a short illness. Basic Education Minister, Mrs Angie Motshekga, spoke the following words in honour of his contribution to the Basic Education Sector:

Dr Nuku’s journey from a humble teacher to the Head of the Eastern Cape Department of Education is a testament to his unwavering commitment, exceptional skill, and profound leadership. His life, rich in academic and professional accomplishments, and he served at the highest levels with distinction and honour. Born into a world filled with challenges, Dr Nuku emerged as a symbol of hope and resilience. His academic achievements, culminating in a D.Ed. in Education Management, Leadership, and Teacher Professionalism, began a lifelong journey of learning and teaching. At Victor Poto High School, where he served as Principal from 1989 to 1996, Dr Nuku laid a foundation of excellence that resonates to this day.

His tenure as the District Manager of Libode and later as the Director of the Libode Mega District saw him turning challenges into opportunities. In 2012, when faced with the daunting task of revitalising the Libode Mega District’s educational standards, Dr Nuku, with the resolve and strength characteristic of his personality, led his team to a national award for the most improved district in 2013. This achievement was evidence of his leadership and his belief in the potential of every educator and learner under his guidance.

Dr Nuku’s contributions extended beyond administrative roles. As a member of the Biology Subject Association and a Senior Examiner for Grade 12 Biology Examinations, he played a crucial role in shaping the future of science education. His involvement with the North West University and the University of Fort Hare’s council demonstrated his commitment to higher education and his dedication to nurturing future leaders. Dr Nuku’s leadership style was characterised by humility and service; he led by example, inspiring those around him with his wisdom, patience, and understanding. In his various roles, from Circuit Manager to Deputy Director General, Dr Nuku consistently demonstrated his commitment to servant leadership. He believed in the transformative power of basic education and dedicated his life to this noble cause. His mission was not just to lead but to impart knowledge, to inspire, and to uplift.

As we bid farewell to this great man, let us take comfort in knowing his legacy will continue to inspire future generations. The corridors of the schools he served, the policies he shaped, and the hearts of those he inspired will forever bear his imprint. In conclusion, let us not only mourn Dr Nuku’s passing, but also celebrate a life well-lived in the service of humanity – a life devoted to service, to education, and to the upliftment of the less fortunate amongst us.
