The provincial online engagement with the Limpopo Province was chaired by Ms Simoné Geyer, DDG for Delivery and Support on 31 January 2025. Limpopo has a pass rate of 85.01%, representing an increase of 5.5% from 2023. It is encouraging to note that despite the 35% national uptake in Mathematics, the uptake of Mathematics in the Limpopo Province is 44.10%, the highest in the country; however, the uptake of Mathematics Literacy is at 62% nationally. The increase in the number of Sign Language candidates is encouraging. The increase in learners with special needs from 102 to 204 can be increased even further. Boy learners are to be prioritised in the system given that their participation rate is below that of the girl learner. The number of learners achieving admission to Bachelor Studies has increased by 7,352. Approximately 81,619 learners receive social grants.
The majority of learners in the province perform at an emerging level in both reading and numeracy across various grades. Key contributing factors to educational challenges in Limpopo include language underperformance and the overall performance of schools in Quintiles 1 to 3. Limpopo experiences low teacher attendance in schools. Learner support through School-Based Support Teams (SBSTs) is inadequately monitored within the province. It is encouraging that Limpopo displays high levels of parental involvement in education and strong community links. During the provincial presentation, Mr Martin Mashaba, Acting HoD for Limpopo said that, “the province aims to exceed 90% in respect of learner performance and improve quality passes in 2025. Limpopo should be known as a province that strives towards excellence in the provision of quality education”.
