The DBE annually coordinates participation of South African learners in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secondary School Essay Competition, an initiative of the SADC Secretariat. The competition aims to encourage youth participation in regional integration affairs. Each participating country is allocated USD 1,000 to be divided amongst the top three learners.
The essay topic for 2025 was: “How can innovation enhance SADC industrialisation and sustainable economic growth and development?” The topic was derived from the theme of the 44th SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government, “Promoting Innovation to unlock opportunities for sustained economic growth and development towards an Industrialised SADC”.
A panel of DBE experts selected the best three essays to represent South Africa at the regional leg of the competition. The top three winners are as follows: 1st place: USD 500; Ms Noluthando Mlondo, KwaZulu-Natal Province; 2nd place: USD 300; Ms Azokuhle N Zulu, KwaZulu-Natal Province; and 3rd place: USD 200; Ms Geetika D Mothiram, KwaZulu-Natal Province.
Ms Noluthando Mlondo secured position three in the regional stage of the competition. In recognition of her achievement, she will receive a monetary award of USD 750 and a certificate of excellence.
The DBE extends its congratulations to all the winners.
