The Director-General of Basic Education, Mr Mathanzima Mweli, conducted monitoring and oversight visits to Sanitation Appropriate for Education (SAFE) initiative sanitation projects across the Limpopo Province on 10 November 2025.
These visits form part of the Department’s continued commitment to providing learners with safe sanitation appropriate facilities, in line with the standards set by the SAFE initiative.
During the oversight visits, Mr Mweli checks progress on project implementation, identify challenges, and reinforces accountability measures to ensure the timely delivery of quality sanitation infrastructure in schools.
World Toilet Day will be observed on 19 November with a focus on sanitation in a changing world with the tagline: “We’ll always need the toilet”. In the Basic Education Sector, the provision of safe and dignified sanitation remains a priority. Appropriate, Ventilated Improved (VIP) toilets are installed in dry and water scarce areas. These toilets are odourless and eco-friendly.
In this modern word, billions still live without a safe toilet, with the poorest, especially women and girls, most affected on a global scale. Ageing infrastructure, climate change, and insufficient investment are increasing pressure on sanitation systems. World Toilet Day highlights the need for future-ready toilets that are accessible, climate-resilient, low-emission, and supported by strong systems and investment. Access to sanitation is a human right; essential for protecting health, the environment, and enabling sustainable development.
