The 2026 Stellenbosch Regional Eskom Expo for Young Scientists brought together young innovators who demonstrated curiosity, creativity, scientific thinking, and a commitment to solving real-world challenges.
Hosted at the Engineering Faculty of the University of Stellenbosch from 20 to 21 August 2026, the event provided learners from 31 primary and high schools with a platform to present research projects covering a diverse range of scientific fields. From agriculture and fertilisation to biomedical research, chemistry, technology, and the possibility of growing plants on Mars, the projects demonstrated learners’ ability to investigate challenges, apply scientific principles, and develop creative solutions.
An inspiring feature of the programme was an address by Ms Dhiya Dharampal, a former Eskom Expo participant who has progressed to pursue an advanced career in Physics and Quantum Computing. Her journey provided learners with a powerful example of how participation in science competitions can open pathways towards exciting careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Addressing the young scientists, Mr Ian Carstens, Chief Education Specialist for Computer Applications Technology (CAT) and Information Technology (IT) from the Department of Basic Education (DBE), congratulated learners for their participation and innovative projects. He expressed his admiration for the depth of learners’ knowledge and their ability to clearly explain the problems their projects sought to address.
Also in attendance was Ms Desiree Letshwiti, Curriculum Education Specialist for Electrical Technology and Mechanical Technology from the DBE, who welcomed the increased participation of female learners. She noted that the achievement of Gold-level awards by female learners was particularly encouraging, demonstrating the importance of exposing girls to MST subjects, and encouraging them to pursue careers in STEM-related fields.
The awards ceremony recognised outstanding achievement across a range of categories, including Animal Sciences, Biomedical and Medical Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Information Technology and Engineering, amongst others. The inclusive awards structure recognised projects at Highly Commended, Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels, celebrating learners who demonstrated strong research, experimentation, creativity, and scientific thinking.
The 2026 Stellenbosch Regional Eskom Expo for Young Scientists programme came to a fitting close by also recognising the important contribution of educators behind the scenes. Teachers who have served on the Science Expo coordination team for between 10 and more than 20 years were awarded merit certificates in recognition of their dedication, commitment, and sustained contribution to the successful hosting of the Expo.
The event was therefore more than a celebration of medals and certificates — it was a celebration of curiosity, perseverance, innovation, mentorship, and possibility, reaffirming the potential of young South African scientists to contribute meaningful solutions to the challenges of tomorrow.
