National U15 Football Championships – a bright future for South African school football

The DBE and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) jointly hosted the National School Sport Championship (NSSC) U/15 Football tournament from 9 11 August 2024, at the Sturrock Park Football Complex in the Gauteng Province. This event set the stage for an exhilarating weekend of top-tier football action, bringing together the best young talent from across the country. Teams from all nine provinces competed fiercely for the coveted title of National Champions, with the atmosphere charged with anticipation and excitement. When the final whistle blew, it was Gauteng’s U15 Boys and Girls teams who emerged victorious, demonstrating their skill and determination as they advanced to their respective finals.

In the Boys’ final, Gauteng faced a formidable KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) team, which had been a dominant force throughout the tournament. The match kicked off with high intensity, and within the first three minutes, Gauteng’s Aphelele Majola capitalized on a defensive error by KZN, expertly scoring a goal that set the tone for the game. Majola, originally from KZN, showcased his ability to penetrate even the most resilient defenses.

KZN fought hard to regain control, but Gauteng’s defense remained steadfast. The team’s impenetrable defense, which had not conceded a single goal throughout the tournament, secured their position as the Boys’ U15 National Champions. Their performance on the pitch was nothing short of outstanding, with several opportunities that could have further extended their lead. Coach Selekedi Mogale praised his team, stating, “This is their first experience with high-performance football. Even if some players don’t make it this time, there’s still U17 and U20 ahead. I hope this experience not only makes them better footballers but also better individuals, having seen what it takes at this level. I encourage them to keep striving until they reach their goals”.

The Girls’ U15 final mirrored the intensity of the Boys’ match, with Gauteng once again competing against KwaZulu-Natal. KZN, led by their star striker Okuhle Sithole, had been a dominant presence throughout the tournament. However, it was Gauteng’s Ritabele Molefe who made the decisive impact. Against the run of play, Molefe unleashed a stunning long-range strike that found the back of the net, securing Gauteng’s lead. Despite KZN’s relentless pressure, Gauteng held firm and emerged as the champions.

As the tournament concluded, it was clear that the true winner was South African school football itself. The exceptional talent on display underscored the dedication and hard work of all the participating teams. For many of these young athletes, the opportunity to represent South Africa at the CAF African Schools Championships in Namibia next month is a dream come true and a significant milestone in their budding careers.

Special recognition is due to SAFA, Schools Football Structures, the DBE, and the DSAC for organising such an exceptional showcase of youth football talent. The future of South African football is indeed looking brighter than ever.
