The Minister of Basic Education, Ms Siviwe Gwarube, attended the FirstRand Foundation National Teaching Excellence awards winners’ brunch in Sandton, Johannesburg on 5 June 2026.

The event formed part of the FirstRand Foundation and the Department of Basic Education’s ongoing commitment to recognise and celebrate excellence in teaching.

The second annual gathering honoured six exceptional educators who have been recognised through the National Teaching Awards (NTA) for their outstanding contribution to education as well as their lasting impact on learners, schools and communities across South Africa.

The brunch provided an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of these distinguished teachers, reflect on the critical role of educators in shaping the future of the country, and strengthen partnerships that advance quality education.

A thriving education system begins with the people at the front of the classroom – the teachers. These dedicated professionals nurture potential and open doors to opportunity with their role extending far beyond merely teaching curriculum. They inspire confidence, shape character, and holistically prepare young people for the demands of the future. The FirstRand Foundation places education at the centre of its social-investment agenda. From Early Childhood Development through to capacity-building initiatives, the Foundation’s work reinforces the principle that quality education requires strong, well-supported educators to strengthen the entire education system.
