DBE concludes phase 1 of the national technical practical skills training for teachers, subject advisors and provincial coordinators for technical subjects

The DBE has officially concluded phase 1 of the National Technical Teacher Practical Skills Training Programme, marking a major milestone in strengthening the delivery of vocational and occupational pathways across South Africa’s nine provinces. Held at the Resolution Circle Skills Centre, the final session brought together technical teachers from Gauteng for intensive, practice‑based training in vocational and occupational oriented subjects.

This comprehensive, hands‑on training programme, which first commenced on 27 March 2023 and concluded on 27 February 2026, whereby teachers, subject advisors, and provincial technical subject coordinators participated in structured workshops, delivered by qualified artisans at accredited skills training centres. The programme equipped participants with updated competencies in workshop practice, technical standards, safety protocols, tool handling, and innovative pedagogical approaches tailored to technical education.

Facilitators and members of the National Training Team (NTT) reported significant improvements in participants’ confidence and capability in operating both basic and advanced tools and machinery. Pre- and post‑training assessment results showed notable gains in practical competence, culminating in certificates of attendance for all participants.

In her closing remarks, Ms Desiree Letshwiti, Chief Education Specialist for Electrical and Mechanical Technology subjects at the DBE, acknowledged the strengthened teamwork, professional growth, and technical proficiency demonstrated throughout the programme. She emphasised that the successful completion of phase 1 represents a continuation rather than a conclusion of the DBE’s commitment to building a skilled, future-ready workforce through empowered technical teachers, commending the progress and future impact of the programme.

Ms Letshwiti further encouraged teachers to return to their schools as “ambassadors of excellence,” applying their newly acquired skills, mentoring peers, and contributing to ongoing transformation in technical, vocational, and occupational education nationwide.

Closing the session, Mr Sello Mabathoana, Project Manager for the Three Stream Model (TSM), expressed appreciation to the DBE National training team members, the provincial coordinators for technical subjects, and officials from the Teacher Training Directorate for their integral support. He reiterated that the achievements of phase 1 lay a solid foundation for phase 2, which will prioritise practical skills training in services-oriented vocational and occupational subjects.
