DBE observes 50th Golden Jubilee commemoration of Youth Month

The commemoration of Youth Month in June, and particularly Youth Day on 16 June, marks the 50th Anniversary of the 1976 Youth Uprising. The aim of the 50th Golden Jubilee Commemoration is to raise awareness on the achievements of the past and empowering today's youth to lead and thrive in a changing world. The commemoration provides an opportunity to honour the sacrifices of the youth of 1976 whilst positioning young people as active participants in shaping South Africa’s democratic, economic, social, and cultural future.

The strategic objectives of the 2026 Youth Month Commemoration are aligned with the national theme: “RESET@50 – The Future Calls” with the slogan, “Our National Commitment to the Future, for Freedom Lives in Every Generation”, and the broader vision of transforming today’s youth to advance youth economic empowerment; promote skills for the future economy; strengthen social cohesion and nation building; address social challenges affecting young people; and promote inclusion and equality.

The commemoration serves to bridge the historic struggle for youth empowerment through equal education, inclusive economic participation and skills development. It seeks to mobilise society towards practical pathways that connect young people to opportunities. Furthermore, the Youth Month commemoration aims to promote active citizenship, showcase interventions that support youth employment and entrepreneurship. It will also strengthen partnerships across sectors and restore hope to young people facing unemployment, exclusion and related social challenges.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE), in partnership with the World Economic Forum (WEF), launched the South Africa Education Accelerator, part of a global network of collaboration platforms driving innovation and systemic change in education in Cape Town on 28 May 2026. The SA Education Accelerator launch, co-chaired by the Minister of Basic Education, Ms Siviwe Gwarube, and Ms Phuthi Mahanyele-Dabengwa, CEO, Naspers SA, include strengthening foundational learning, particularly literacy, numeracy and digital skills to ensure that every learner is able to progress and participate meaningfully in the economy.

The SA Education Accelerator brings partners together around two connected streams of work: The first is foundational numeracy research, because early Mathematics begins our Mathematics, STEM and technical skills pipeline. The second is multiple learning pathways through Focus Schools, because strong foundations must lead somewhere real: into credible technical, vocational, digital, entrepreneurial and workplace-linked opportunities. Minister Gwarube and Ms Mahanyele-Dabengwa also signed a pledge to accelerate progress in education, committing to build an education system where every learner has the quality foundation to succeed, the confidence to progress and multiple learning pathways to flourish.
