Physical Education

The Department has taken a deliberate step, through the curriculum, of ensuring that Physical Education constitutes an integral component of the holistic education of learners. Through the Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement learners have access to Physical Education as a component in the Life Orientation/Life Skills area and this contributes to the Integrated School Sport Programme which is the pillar and bedrock of sport in the country.

Physical Education in the Intermediate Phase

The development of the learner’s gross and fine motor skills and perceptual development is fundamental in the Foundation Phase. Physical and motor development is integral to the holistic development of learners. It makes a significant contribution to learners’ social, personal and emotional development. Play, movement, games and sport contribute to developing positive attitudes and values. This area focuses on perceptual and locomotor development, rhythm, balance and laterality. The focus in the Foundation Phase is on games and some activities that will form the basis of participating in sports later on. Physical growth, development, recreation and play are emphasised.

  • Participates in fitness programme
  • Plays community or indigenous games that include the concept of invasion
  • Performs a sequence of physical activities
  • Participates in an outdoor recreational programme
  • Safety issues relating to participation in fitness exercises

 

Learner:

  • Participates in physical activities that promote components of fitness
  • Plays target games
  • Programme to improve movement techniques
  • Participates in an outdoor recreational activity
  • Safety issues relating to participation in fitness exercises

Learner:

  • Improves own physical wellness level
  • Executes a game plan for individual or team sport
  • Refines own and peer performance in movement activities
  • Refines own performance in an outdoor recreational activity
  • Safety issues relating to participation in fitness exercises

 

Physical Education in the Intermediate Phase

Learner:

  • Physical fitness: programmes to promote well-being
  • Skills in playground and/ or community and/or indigenous games
  • Environmentally responsible outdoor recreational group or individual activities
  • Skills in traditional and/or non-traditional sport
  • Safety issues relating to participation in fitness exercises

 

Learner:

  • Improvement of current personal level of fitness and health
  • Umpiring and leadership skills in self-designed and modified games (teach peers)
  • Various leadership roles in a self-designed recreational group activity
  • Safety issues relating to participation in fitness exercises

Learner:

  • Achievement of own personal fitness and health goals
  • Long-term engagement in traditional and/or non-traditional sport or playground and/ or community and/or indigenous games or relaxation and recreational activities
  • Safety issues relating to participation in fitness exercises
