The DBE, in partnership with Sport and Recreation South Africa, will be hosting the annual South African Schools National Championships (Summer Games) at the Universities of Johannesburg and the Witwatersrand from 10 to 14 December 2018. In addition to traditional sporting codes such as football, rugby and cricket, sporting codes such as basketball, volleyball, swimming and gymnastics also feature on the programme. The official opening ceremony will be taking place at the Standard Bank Arena in Johannesburg on 10 December 2018. The Summer Games will culminate with the closing ceremony on 13 December, also at the Standard Bank Arena.
Another sporting event that provided entertainment to sporting enthusiasts is the Transnet Games which took place at Rosina Sedibana Sports School in Laudium, Pretoria. Four sporting codes, football, netball, athletics and chess were offered during the two-day event that took place from 30 November to 01 December 2018. In addition to the Games, Transnet also hosts the prestigious Transnet Rural and Farm Schools Tournament annually.
Mr Sifiso Ngobese, Director for Sport and Enrichment in Education, said that, “the games present learners with an opportunity to unwind after the gruelling examinations period, and to engage in uplifting physical activities – stimulating both the body and the mind. Physically fit learners are also mentally fit learners”.
