DBE Ministry acknowledges the vital role teachers play in shaping South Africa’s future

Opening the 2026 National Teaching Awards (NTAs), Basic Education Deputy Minister, Dr Reginah Mhaule, highlighted the vital role teachers play in bringing education policy, curriculum and innovation to life. She reminded us that behind every learner’s journey is an educator who teaches, guides, inspires and believes in their potential. She also emphasised the importance of inclusive education, strong foundations, and preparing learners for a rapidly changing world, whilst reminding educators that their influence extends far beyond the classroom: “Every teacher has the power to change the direction of a life. The NTAs are an opportunity for the country to pause and recognise the people who give our education system its human face and its soul”.

In her congratulatory keynote address, Minister of Basic Education, Ms Siviwe Gwarube, celebrated educators who help young people look beyond their circumstances, discover their potential, and imagine what they can become. She reflected on the importance of Strong Foundations for Strong Futures, highlighting the role of Early Childhood Development (ECD); foundational literacy and numeracy; teacher development; inclusion; and safer schools in shaping better outcomes for learners. The Minister also reminded South Africans that excellence should not end with recognition. The exceptional work happening in one classroom should inspire and strengthen others across the education system: “Excellence should travel. Knowledge should travel. This is how a system becomes stronger”.

Minister Gwarube added that the top 133 teachers should be viewed as a beacon of hope for many young people, especially those living in less affluent communities or townships. Redirecting the Basic Education Sector's attention to foundational learning remains one of the most effective ways to improve quality learning outcomes from General Education and Training (GET) and Further Education and Training (FET).

As another major highlight during the ceremony, Minister Gwarube praised Appreciate Jiyane and his teacher, Mr Paulos Emmanuel Mthimunye from Khulufunde Primary School, for winning the Special Ministerial Award. This special award recognises teachers nominated by learners who share how their teachers have made a lasting impact on their lives. It is a powerful reminder that great teachers do more than teach – they inspire, uplift and shape futures.
