Have you always wanted to make a difference in the life of a child? Teachers lay the foundations for future learning and success. Would you like to be a change maker?
The Funza Lushaka Bursary (FLB) programme is more than just financial aid, it is a powerful gateway into one of the most impactful professions that inspire, lead and shape future young minds. The programme is targeted at youth below the age of 30, who have passed matric with a bachelors pass or who meet the requirements for entry to a university.
Applications for the FLB opened on 1 October 2026. The closing date for returning applicants is 30 November and the closing date for first time applicants is 31 January 2027. The Bursary covers the following essentials: tuition fees; comfortable accommodation or transport for those staying at home or with relatives; daily meals; vital learning materials; personal care allowance; and hands-on teaching practice support. In collaboration with the Department of Higher Education and Training and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), the programme is refined to meet the ever-evolving needs of our education system, ensuring that South Africa’s vision for a brighter future is possible.
Ms Lala Maje, Director for the Initial Teacher Education Directorate, explains that the Department works with provinces, districts, circuits, schools, and community leaders involved with youth programmes during the recruitment process. She added that the recommendation of applicants during selection sessions is informed by teacher shortages in the Basic Education sector. Priority areas are aligned to provincial subject priorities and must enhance key programmes initiated and implemented such as Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) in support of the Three Stream Model, South African Indigenous languages, or inclusive education to assist learners with special education needs.
