In collaboration with the Western Cape Education Department, delegates from Brazil, the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA), UNESCO, UNICEF, OECD, Sanlam, and the provincial education departments of Eastern Cape, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal participated in a series of school visits on 20 October 2026.
The visits provided delegates with an opportunity to observe South Africa’s foundational learning initiatives in practice and to gain insight into their implementation across diverse educational and socio-economic contexts. The selected schools represented a range of communities, including Quintile 3 to Quintile 5 schools, highlighting the varying environments in which foundational learning programmes are being delivered.
The schools visited included: Sunlands Primary School; Sonwabo Primary School; Parow West Primary School; Panorama Primary School; Kasselsvlei Primary School; and Fairdale Primary School.
The schools were located across Parow, Panorama, Gugulethu, and surrounding communities, providing delegates with a comprehensive view of educational practices and learner support initiatives within the Western Cape. The visits demonstrated South Africa’s commitment to strengthening foundational learning and creating quality learning opportunities for all learners, regardless of their socio-economic background.
