The courts came alive with energy, determination and the unmistakable spirit of South African school sport as the 2026 U15 Kay Motsepe Schools Netball Championship national finals brought together the country’s finest young netball talent from 13 to 15 August 2026 at the Mutango Lodge in the Gauteng Province. With 36 top school teams competing, the Championship celebrated far more than sporting excellence, it created a platform for young people to build friendships, confidence and dreams.
The tournament highlighted the power of sport to unite learners from different backgrounds. Mr Given Mabena, Director: Sports and Enrichment at the Department of Basic Education (DBE), emphasised the importance of the partnership between the Motsepe Foundation, Sanlam and the DBE in advancing social inclusion and nation-building. He noted that bringing learners from previously disadvantaged and more affluent communities together allows them to share experiences, build friendships and learn from one another. He described the Championship as an opportunity to bridge socioeconomic divides and strengthen unity among South Africa’s young people.
Ms Virginia Nkosi from Sanlam delivered the keynote address, encouraging players to embrace the lessons that netball offers both on and off the court. She highlighted teamwork, discipline, perseverance and talent development, reminding learners that school sport builds confidence and valuable life skills. She encouraged players to support one another, recognise their unique value, remain positive and believe in their ability to make a difference. Her message was clear: netball is not only about winning, but also about self-worth, friendship, resilience and dreaming bigger.
The Championship concluded with outstanding performances across both streams, with every participating school demonstrating commitment, character and fighting spirit. The event also recognised the dedication of coaches, teachers, managers, officials, parents and supporters who contributed to its success.
The tournament winners were from the Botho Stream: Die Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool (AHMP), Pretoria, who emerged victorious after defeating Helpmekaar College 18–17 in a thrilling final. Oranje finished third. From the Ubuntu Stream: Idlangamabala Secondary School from Mpumalanga claimed the title after overcoming Jabulile Secondary School 17–15. Motjedi finished third. The 2026 Championship was a powerful celebration of talent, teamwork, opportunity and the unifying power of sport.
