The New Teacher Induction Programme (NTIP) reached an important milestone on 16 September 2026, when the Department of Basic Education (DBE) hosted the final NTIP Policy Review Steering Committee meeting at the Birchwood Hotel in Gauteng.
Chaired by Ms Lala Maje, the Director of Initial Teacher Education (ITE), the meeting brought together key stakeholders, including the South African Council for Educators (SACE), the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), JET Education Services and VVOB, who have contributed to the development of the NTIP Policy, the review of NTIP learning materials and the deployment of the programme on Moodle.
The meeting focused on reviewing progress and the final development of the NTIP Policy and learning materials. It also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to reflect on the progress made since the inception of the project and consider the final input required to strengthen the Policy and learning materials.
The NTIP Policy and learning materials are intended to support early-career teachers as they enter the profession by providing a structured induction process that contributes to their professional development and professionalisation. The programme brings together policy guidance, learning resources, workplace support, mentorship, and other elements aimed at strengthening teachers' transition into the profession.
The Steering Committee acknowledged the extensive work, collaboration and commitment of all stakeholders involved throughout the development and review process. The close-out meeting marked a significant step towards establishing a coherent national approach to teacher induction and strengthening support for teachers at the beginning of their professional journey.
