The 2016 ABC Motsepe Schools Eisteddfod kicks-off

Rhema Ministries in Randburg was filled with the melodious sounds of choral music performed by learners from across all nine provinces as they competed in the 2016 ABC Motsepe Schools Eisteddfod national championships. Basic Education Minister, Mrs Angie Motshekga, accompanied by the Motsepe Foundation CEO, Dr Precious Motsepe, formally opened the Eisteddfod that will be taking place from 28 June 2016 to 01 July 2016.

Various monetary prizes, including trophies and certificates of participation, will be awarded to the winners in the 38 categories of the competition. The winning choir will receive a prize to the value of R10,000.00 followed by R7,500.00 for the second place winner and R5,000.00 for the third place winner.

The ABC Motsepe Schools Eisteddfod is one of the school enrichment programmes that enhance the quality of learning and teaching in schools. Not only will the competition help learners to discover and develop their musical talents, but the competition will also instil discipline and equip them with time management skills. Learners are also being encouraged to embrace a team working spirit and determination in whatever project they undertake in order to be fully prepared for the future.

The Eisteddfod is also a vehicle for addressing issues of social cohesion and cultural tolerance, whilst keeping learners occupied and away from drugs and substance abuse during the school holiday period. The competition is made possible through a partnership by the DBE, the Motsepe Foundation and the Department of Arts and Culture.

The Minister of Youth Sports and Culture from the Republic of Burundi, Mr Jean Bosco Hatimana and his Senior Advisor for Political, Diplomatic and Co-operations, Mr Jean Jacques Nyenimigabo also graced the occasion.
