About DBE

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) was formed when the then National Department of Education was split into two: DBE and the Department of Higher Education and Training. DBE has been tasked with overseeing primary and secondary education in South Africa.

DBE is headquarted at the Sol Plaatje House in 222 Struben Street.

 

THE minister
 

Mrs. Angie Motshekga has been involved in education since 1981, when she was a teacher at Orlando High School. She has since held various positions, the most current being the Minister of Basic Education, the President of the ANC Women's League, member of the ANC's NEC.

THE DEPUTY MINISTER
 

Mr. Mohamed Enver Surty has a BA degree and an honours degree in Philosophy, a B.Proc degree, an LLM degree in Constitutional Litigation and a Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education.

THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL
   

Mr Bobby Soobrayan was appointed as the Director-General of Basic Education in May 2010 under Minister Mrs Angie Motshekga. Mr Soobrayan has been closely involved in education since the beginning of his career as a Physical and General Science teacher in Durban in the 1980s and subsequently as a researcher and lecturer at the then University of Natal.
